Ghostwriting Services UK

Ghostwriting is the practice of writing a book, a chapter or a section of a manuscript on behalf of someone else, so that it reads in their voice and carries their name, while the actual writing is done by a professional writer under a written agreement. For many authors, it is the only realistic route between having a story worth telling and holding a finished manuscript in their hands.

If you have found this page, you are probably not asking whether ghostwriting exists. You already know it does. What you actually want to know is whether it will work for your book, whether anyone will find out, whether you will still own what gets written, and what it is likely to cost. Those four questions sit underneath almost every search that brings someone here, and we would rather answer them plainly than bury them under sales copy.

Who We Write For

British Publishers works with first-time and experienced authors across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Some arrive with a complete story and no confidence that they can put it on the page. Others have a partial draft that has stalled, or a career's worth of expertise they want turned into a book that supports their business. A smaller number are working on fiction.

Memoir and business book ghostwriting source material

Two types of project make up most of the UK ghostwriting market, and it is worth naming them so you can see where yours sits:

Memoir and autobiography

The person who most needs a ghostwriter usually has a genuinely significant story and little experience writing at length. This is where most serious UK ghostwriting demand sits, and where the working relationship matters most, because a memoir depends on capturing someone's actual voice rather than a generic one.

Business and thought-leadership books

For a founder, consultant or professional, a book is a marketing asset with a measurable return: it supports speaking work, credibility and lead generation. These projects are usually shorter and more structured than a memoir, and the timeline is often set by a launch date rather than by the story itself.

Fiction

Fiction ghostwriting exists, and we take it on, but it is a smaller and more sceptical market. Fiction clients are more likely to want an as-told-to credit or a structural collaboration than a fully invisible writer, and we shape the engagement around that.

Confidentiality, Ownership and Credit

Before price, before process, this is what most people actually want to know. We are putting it near the top of the page deliberately, because burying it in small print is common practice among ghostwriting providers, and it should not be.

Is ghostwriting confidential?

Yes. Every ghostwriting engagement is covered by a written confidentiality agreement before any material is shared or discussed. Your name is never disclosed to anyone outside the project team without your written permission, and that includes whether the book was ghostwritten at all.

Do I own my book after ghostwriting?

Yes. Ownership is handled through a written assignment of copyright, agreed before work begins. Once the contract is signed and the fee terms are met, the manuscript, including every draft produced along the way, belongs to you. A vague verbal assurance is not good enough for a decision this significant, so the mechanism is set out in writing rather than simply promised.

What credit options are available?

Most clients choose no visible credit at all, so the book reads as though they wrote it entirely themselves. Others prefer an "as told to" or "with" credit, particularly for memoir, where acknowledging a collaborator can add rather than subtract credibility. This is agreed at the outset, because it affects how the manuscript is structured and how it is marketed later.

How the Ghostwriting Process Works

A ghostwriting project runs through a consistent sequence, even though the content of every book is different:

Ghostwriting process from interviews to staged drafts

Discovery call

We talk through the book, the timeline and the budget before any commitment is made.

Project scoping

A written outline of the process, milestones and fee structure is agreed and signed.

Research and interviews

For memoir and business books, this usually means recorded interviews, working from existing notes, diaries or drafts, and fact-checking anything that will appear in print.

Chapter outline

A structure is agreed before drafting begins, so there are no surprises later.

Sample chapter

You read and approve a sample before the full manuscript is written, so the voice is confirmed early on.

Staged drafts

The manuscript is delivered in sections, with review points built in, rather than as a single file at the end of the project.

Revision rounds

An agreed number of revision rounds is included in the fee, set out at scoping stage.

Sign-off and handover

Once you approve the final manuscript, it is handed to editing and production if you are continuing with those services.

How long does it take to ghostwrite a book?

Most full-length ghostwriting projects take between six and twelve months from the discovery call to a signed-off manuscript. The main variables are the length of the book, how much research and how many interviews are involved, and how quickly feedback on each draft can be turned around.

What information does a ghostwriter need from an author?

At minimum: a clear sense of what the book needs to achieve, availability for interviews or recorded conversation, and any existing material such as notes, letters, photographs, previous drafts or speeches. The more source material you can provide, the less time is spent reconstructing detail from memory, and the faster and more accurate the manuscript.

Who Writes Your Book

Every project is assigned to a writer from our editorial team with relevant experience in the genre and subject matter, whether that is memoir, business writing or fiction. Writer and project are matched deliberately, because the working relationship over what is usually a six to twelve month collaboration matters as much as writing skill on its own. You will know who is writing your book, and you will speak with them directly throughout, not only at the start and the end.

What Ghostwriting Costs

Honestly, this is the question where the UK market is most confusing, because published rates span an extraordinary range: some providers advertise complete manuscripts for a few thousand pounds, while established ghostwriters and agencies quote five and six figures for the same kind of book. These are not two prices for the same product. They are two different markets that happen to use the same search terms.

The lower figures usually mean a templated structure, minimal research and little or no direct collaboration with the author. The higher figures reflect months of interviews, genuine research, staged drafts and an experienced writer working closely with you throughout. We do not compete at the lower end of that range, and would rather say so plainly than let a low quote set an expectation we cannot meet.

What actually drives your quote:

Length. A 60,000-word memoir and a 25,000-word business book require different amounts of writing time.

Research depth. Fact-checking, archive research and third-party verification add time before a single chapter is drafted.

Interview volume. More recorded interviews mean more material to work from, and more transcription and structuring work.

Timeline. A compressed schedule against a launch date costs more than an open one.

Get in touch with a description of your project and we will provide a written quote based on those variables, rather than a single headline figure that would not actually apply to your book.

Flat fee, staged payments or royalty share?

Most projects run on a flat fee, paid in stages tied to milestones such as the approved outline, the sample chapter and each set of drafts, rather than as one lump sum. Royalty share arrangements are occasionally agreed for business books with a strong existing platform, but they are the exception, not the default, and we will say honestly if we think your project is not a good fit for one.

Ghostwriting and AI

Authors increasingly ask, reasonably, whether AI tools are used in the writing process. We are happy to set out our policy on this directly during the discovery call, and would encourage you to ask any provider the same question before signing anything. If a policy cannot be stated plainly, that is worth noticing.

Ghostwriter or Editor: Which Do You Need?

A ghostwriter writes the manuscript for you, working from your ideas, interviews and material, so the book exists in your voice without you having written every sentence. An editor works on a manuscript you have already written, improving structure, clarity, pacing and prose without changing who did the original writing.

If you already have a complete or near-complete draft, editing is almost always the better and less expensive route. If you have the story but not the time, skill or confidence to write it yourself, ghostwriting is the fit. If you are not sure which applies to you, tell us where your project currently stands and we will recommend the right service honestly, even when that means recommending the cheaper one.

  • What is ghostwriting? British Publishers

Ghostwriting is when a professional writer writes a book, or a substantial part of one, on behalf of someone else, so it reads in that person's voice and is published under their name, working from their ideas, interviews and material under a written agreement.

  • How much does ghostwriting cost in the UK? British Publishers

Published UK rates vary enormously, from a few thousand pounds at the templated end of the market to five or six figures for an experienced writer and a fully collaborative process. Cost depends on length, research depth, interview volume and timeline. We provide a written quote once we understand your project.

  • How does the ghostwriting process work? British Publishers

It runs through discovery, scoping, research and interviews, a chapter outline, a sample chapter, staged drafts with revision rounds, and final sign-off before handover to editing. You are involved at every stage, not only at the start and the end.

  • Do ghostwriters write the entire book? British Publishers

Usually, yes, working from your ideas, interviews and any source material you provide. Some projects instead involve developmental collaboration on a partial draft, or structural rescue of a manuscript that has stalled, rather than a full write from scratch.

  • Can I hire a ghostwriter for my memoir? British Publishers

Yes, and memoir is where most genuine UK ghostwriting demand sits. It typically involves recorded interviews, working from existing material such as letters, diaries or photographs, and careful attention to your voice throughout.

  • Do I keep ownership of my book after ghostwriting? British Publishers

Yes. Ownership is set out through a written assignment of copyright agreed before work begins, so the finished manuscript, and every draft along the way, belongs to you once the contract terms are met.

  • How long does it take to ghostwrite a book? British Publishers

Most full-length projects take six to twelve months, depending on the book's length, how much research and interviewing is required, and how quickly you can review and approve each draft.

  • What information does a ghostwriter need from an author? British Publishers

A clear sense of what the book needs to achieve, availability for interviews, and any existing material: notes, letters, photographs, previous drafts or speeches. More source material generally means a faster, more accurate manuscript.

  • Is ghostwriting confidential? British Publishers

Yes. Every project is covered by a written confidentiality agreement before any material is shared, and your identity and involvement are never disclosed without your written permission.

  • What is the difference between a ghostwriter and an editor? British Publishers

A ghostwriter writes the manuscript for you from your ideas and material. An editor improves a manuscript you have already written. If you have a complete draft, editing is usually the better and less expensive choice.
